Creating Media Literate Teens

In today’s world, teens and pre-teens need to be “smart” consumers of media messages and this calls for the support of their teachers, parents, and other trusted adults to help them make sense of what they are hearing and seeing.
So how do we, as trusted adults, help young people navigate the media’s messages and make accurately informed decisions about their health and well-being? The key is media literacy.

New research published May 8 from the University of Illinois finds that alcohol use among Illinois teens is now double the national average, a shocking finding. Other drugs, including cannabis and prescription painkillers, are gaining ground as well.

Candor Health Education's Navigating Middle School Years is an engaging, scenario-based program designed for 5th and 6th graders. Through relatable stories and interactive discussions, students explore key topics such as self-advocacy, peer pressure, online safety, and responsible decision-making. By understanding the developing adolescent brain and practicing essential social-emotional skills, students build confidence to navigate the challenges of middle school.
This in-person program is ideal for school orientations, setting a positive tone for the new academic year. | |

Rachel SakwaHealth Educator | |
Rachel joined Candor Health Education in February of 2025. She is a graduate of University of Illinois Ubana-Champaign where she earned her Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology with a Public Health minor.
Rachel is passionate about athletics and wellness. She served as a coach for her university track club and as a Rehab Technician at Illinois Bone & Joint Institute. Through these experiences she discovered a sense of purpose in empowering individuals of all ages to achieve their physical goals and build lasting confidence.
She is excited to empower young people to make wise and confident decisions, helping them become more self-aware and thoughtful in their choices. | | | |
