The Period Poverty Problem

As of January 2024, half of the states in the U.S. have passed legislation that require free menstrual products be available to students in public schools. However, the variation between bills is that not every state provides funding for the products, or they are only covering middle and high schools.

When marijuana legalization first started gaining momentum in the United States, it was heralded as a progressive step toward criminal justice reform, economic growth and public health benefits all at once. Advocates promised that legal cannabis would eliminate the illicit market, generate tax revenue and ensure a safe, well-regulated industry.

That is not how things have turned out.

MEET THE TEAM

Antonio Mercado

Health Educator

Antonio joined Candor in January 2025. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Advertising from the University of North Texas, where he found his passion for art and advocacy.


Antonio began his career at the Health Education Learning Project as an HIV tester and counselor. He then took on a leadership role overseeing the Mpowerment Project, a community-level HIV prevention initiative at AIDS Outreach Center. Following this, Antonio relocated to Chicago, where he became a Link Up Coordinator, focusing on harm reduction strategies for BIPOC queer men. Antonio is a dedicated public health professional with extensive experience in community organizing, HIV prevention, and substance use harm reduction.
